FEMA Flood Maps
In January of 2015 FEMA proposed a revision to the existing Flood Insurance Rate Maps (FIRMs) of NYC. The last substantive revision of the FIRMs dates back to 1983. The proposed maps are undergoing appeal by New York City and therefore are expected to be put into effect no earlier than 2017.
Under the proposed FIRMs the total number of New York buildings included in high risk flood zones will nearly double, increasing to 71,500 properties. The implications in relation to the NYC building code can be seen in Appendix G of the building code.
