R609.3 Reinforced Grouted Multiple-Wythe Masonry

The thickness of grout or mortar between masonry units and reinforcement shall not be less than 1/4 inch (7 mm), except that 1/4-inch (7 mm) bars may be laid in horizontal mortar joints at least 1/2 inch (13 mm) thick, and steel wire reinforcement may be laid in horizontal mortar joints at least twice the thickness of the wire diameter.
