5.3.1 Private Residence Electric Elevators
(a) does not open directly into a garage.
(b) has continuous-pressure operation.
(c) car platform is equipped with a device that, if the platform is obstructed in its downward travel by a force of 18 N (4 lbf) or more applied anywhere at its lower surface, will open an electric contact in the control circuit and thus stop the downward travel of the car within 75 mm (3 in.). The stroke of the device shall be not less than the stopping distance of the platform. This device shall be a type that will not reset unless it has been returned to its normal position. The elevator shall be permitted to operate in the up direction.
(a) The floor opening at the upper landing is protected by a partial enclosure and gate at least 910 mm (36 in.) high with openings that will reject a ball 25 mm (1 in.) in diameter, and the gate is provided with a combination mechanical lock and electric contact.
(b) The floor opening is provided with a vertically lifting hatch cover that is automatically raised and lowered vertically by the ascending and descending car, provided this cover meets the following requirements:
(1) It is fitted with guides to ensure its proper seating.
(2) It is designed and installed to sustain a total load of 3.6 kPa (75 lbf/ft2) or 135 kg (300 lb) at any one point.
(3) It is equipped with an electric contact that will prevent the upward travel of the car when a force of 90 N (20 lbf) is placed at any point on the top of the hatch cover.
(a) the elevator equipment shall be guarded in conformance with 2.10.1. Where the guarding can be removed, a sign in conformance with the requirements of ANSI Z535.2 or CAN/CSA-Z321, whichever is applicable, shall be located on or adjacent to the guarding warning of the potential hazards.
(b) pipes conveying steam, gas, or liquids shall be guarded or located to prevent discharge onto the equipment.
(b) provided with a cabinet door(s) or panel (s) that is not self-closing and shall be kept closed.
Where the cabinets are located outside the hoistway or are accessible from inside the car, the cabinet door(s) or panel(s) shall be secured using Group 2 Security (see Section 8.1) lock(s) or tamper-resistant fasteners.
(a) the elevator equipment shall be located to eliminate any obstructions that prohibit operating or servicing the equipment.
(b) if an obstruction does not prohibit the operation or servicing of the equipment but creates an interference with servicing the equipment, a sign in conformance with the requirements of ANSI Z535.2 or CAN/CSA-Z321, whichever is applicable, shall be prominently posted at the entrance to the work space warning of the obstruction.
22.214.171.124.5 Temperature and Humidity in Machinery Spaces, Machine Rooms, Control Spaces, and Control Rooms
(a) Access doors shall be
(1) kept closed and locked
(2) provided with a spring-type lock arranged to permit the doors to be opened from the inside without a key
(1) located to permit the required maintenance and inspection.
(2) a maximum width of 600 mm (24 in.) and a maximum height of 600 mm (24 in.). These dimensions shall be permitted to be increased, provided any resultant opening through the access opening into the hoistway shall reject a 300 mm (12 in.) diameter ball.
(3) provided with doors or panels that shall be kept closed and locked.
(a) Where the machine is mounted in the hoistway, a means to move the car from outside the hoistway shall be provided. The means shall have a display device or equivalent to convey the following information about the elevator simultaneously:
(1) the direction of travel
The display device or equivalent shall remain operable during a failure of the normal building power supply. The power source shall be capable of providing for the operation of the display device or equivalent for at least 4 h.
(b) Where the controller is mounted inside the hoistway, it shall be located so that it can be inspected, tested, and maintained from inside the car or from outside the hoistway without full bodily entry into the hoistway.
(a) Where the machine or its controls are mounted on the car and are located so they can be inspected, tested, or maintained from inside the car, the car top clearance shall comply with 126.96.36.199.1.
(b) Where the machine or its controls are mounted on the car and are located so they can only be inspected, tested, or maintained from the top of the car while power is not disconnected from the elevator, the top car clearance shall comply with 188.8.131.52.3. A sign in conformance with the requirements of ANSI Z535.2 or CAN/CSA-Z321, whichever is applicable, shall be prominently posted at the entrance to the work space warning of the hazard. A means to disable the landing stations shall be provided at the controller.
Where the guarding can be removed, a sign in conformance with the requirements of ANSI Z535.2 or CAN/CSA-Z321, whichever is applicable, shall be located on or adjacent to the guarding warning of the potential hazards.
(1) 10 mm (0.375 in.) on the sides and top of the door
(2) 13 mm (0.5 in.) at the bottom of the door
(1) overlap the top and sides of the opening by not less than 13 mm (0.5 in.)
(2) not exceed 10 mm (0.375 in.) above the sill
(3) have a clearance between the panel and the frame not exceeding 10 mm (0.375 in.)
The doors' fire-protection rating shall be not less than required by the building code (see Section 1.3). The doors shall be designed to withstand a force of 670 N (150 lbf) applied horizontally, in either direction, over an area 100 mm x 100 mm (4 in. x 4 in.) in the center of the doors without permanent displacement or deformation.
The locking device shall be a type that will either
(a) prevent car movement unless the door is locked in the closed position
(b) permit the car to start if the door or gate is in the closed position but not locked, provided that the device stops the car if the door or gate fails to lock before the car has moved 150 mm (6 in.) away from the landing. The device shall also prevent the opening of the hoistway door or gate unless the car is within 150 mm (6 in.) of the landing.
The locking device shall conform to 2.12.4.
