1813.4 Design Considerations
JUMP TO FULL CODE CHAPTER
Where liquefaction is determined to be probable, the following considerations shall be addressed in the design:
- Liquefiable soils shall be considered to have no passive (lateral) resistance or bearing capacity value for the design earthquake, unless shown otherwise by accepted methods of analysis. The engineer shall submit an analysis for review and approval by the commissioner, demonstrating that the proposed construction is safe against the effects of soil liquefaction.
- Where liquefiable soils are present in sloped ground or over sloped nonliquefiable substrata and where lateral displacement is possible, the engineer shall submit a stability analysis for review and approval by the commissioner, demonstrating that the proposed construction is safe against failure of the soil and that the effects of potential lateral displacements are acceptable.
