R802.4.2 Attics With Storage

In conventional rafter construction, the unsupported span of ceiling joists shall not exceed the values set forth in Table R802.4(2) in attics which are not served by a fixed stair, have a clear height of 42 inches (1067 mm) or more between joist and rafter, and have a design live load not exceeding 20 psf (958 Pa) and a design dead load not exceeding 10 psf (479 Pa). The maximum allowable span of joists that support attic spaces that are accessed by means of a fixed stair shall be determined in accordance with Table R502.3.1(1) for residential sleeping areas.
